The last two months of the year bring on the holiday cheer, but its also one of the busiest and most nutritionally-challenged times for adults. Between work, planning and shopping for the holidays, running errands and helping out with kids activities, most adults forget about their own daily nutritional needs.
According to Alyssa Greenstein, RD, LD/N, senior manager for nutrition affairs at the Dairy Council of Florida, there are some simple steps adults can take to ensure theyre keeping energy levels high and getting their daily nutrition intake during these busy holiday months.
Dont skip your meals. Its easy to do, the busier you are. Well balanced meals that include fruits, vegetables, dairy and lean proteins give you the nutrients (potassium, fiber, calcium, iron) and energy you need, especially on those busy days.
Put some healthy snacks in your purse and briefcase, such as nuts, crackers, string cheese or yogurt bars. That way, it will be there if you need it on those especially time-strapped days.
Keep a nutrition first aid kit at work. Put some chocolate milk in the office fridge, along with some fruit, cheese and yogurt. Stash whole grain cereal, almonds, crackers and peanut butter in your office. These are great on the go snacks and a better alternative to sugary snacks and candy. Plus, chocolate milk is a great way to refuel and rehydrate.
Invite nutrition (and fun) into your team meetings with smoothies or frozen yogurt bars. Or have mid-afternoon cookie and milk breaks. Milk is the number one food source of calcium, potassium and vitamin D three of the four nutrients that the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans says are lacking in the diets of both adults and children. Plus, research shows that three servings of milk, cheese or yogurt each day as part of a nutrient-rich, balanced diet may help maintain a healthy weight — especially important during the holiday time.
If youre feeling sluggish and fatigued, try a low-carb/high-protein snack such as nuts or eat a small meal of chicken or fish and a vegetable.
Talk to your dietitian about your optimal vitamin intake this holiday season. A little more vitamins and minerals could help you stay healthier and ward off colds and other sicknesses.

After suddenly finding himself unemployed at the age of 61, business leader and executive Bill Flint faced a gloomy economy, an uncertain future and a feeling that he was being punished. He refers to it as a time when Faith and Fear collided; it was his, Now what, God? moment. Lifes challenges are often shadowy and complicated, but because of his trust in God he wanted Faith to win. Flint is the author of the new book and training process The Journey to Competitive Advantage Through Servant Leadership, published by Westbow Press a Division of Thomas Nelson Publishing.
Having time to think about his life, his relationship with God and the path ahead, he realized that his situation wasnt about punishment after all. It was a life lesson disguised as misfortune, delivered at a time when he would finally be able to give his full attention to something he had dreamed about for many years; starting his own leadership training and consulting firm. Had he not lost his job, he would never have attempted it. He had the security of a good job with a great paycheck and, at 61, would have told himself it was too late to start a business. However, at this intersection in lifes journey, it became clear that Bill was being given the chance to share his 38 years of business experience both the successes and struggles with those who are entrusted to bring out the best in people: leaders of businesses , non-profits and churches.
After starting Flint Strategic Partners in Goshen, Indiana he guided his business through a successful start-up helping organizations develop talented employees by first helping them develop capable leadership. Then, the time was right to step forward with another vision; writing a book, something of a training manual for leaders, that would help teach them about servant leadership and how to motivate, communicate and care about people while finding the real joy and happiness that can come as a leader, if the people you lead are put first.
In The Journey to Competitive Advantage Through Servant Leadership, Flint educates his readers on the characteristics of servant leaders: their passion for people, open communication style, desire to build sincere relationships, motivational skills, honesty, patience, humility and desire to live their lives in a moral and ethical way. Bill, said that during his career he learned that to build a sustainable competitive advantage depends on how people are treated-and the best way to build a successful organization is by creating an environment of caring, mutual trust and respect between the leaders and their people. This is accomplished by helping people discover and reach their God given potential which helps build a sense of community and security for the people and the organization.
In his Ten-P Formula, Flint chose ten words, all beginning with the letter P, to describe the servant leader. One of those words is potential. He says servant leaders talk about the potential of their people, while other leaders talk more about peoples weaknesses. Servant leaders look for potential the minute they first meet someone, and they dont judge based on looks, background and education. The people they lead start with a clean slate and lots of opportunities. He strongly believes there are many passionate and energetic employees in the business world who just need someone to trust and understand them and many potential leaders who just need the right kind of training and accountability to become servant leaders. Flint says, there is so much untapped potential being wasted every day resulting in a gap between a companys vision and the results they are achieving.
Some key lessons he hopes readers take away about servant leadership:
